Undergraduate Programs

The undergraduate programs in the mathematics department introduce central ideas in a variety of areas in mathematics. Our formula for success is:

critical thinking + rigorous reasoning = enhanced problem-solving ability

The Mathematics program provides students with a variety of courses that establish a mathematician’s mentality, and upon completion of any of our programs, students are equipped for exciting careers as well as graduate study.

Mathematics, at its core, exists as a means to reveal and explain patterns, whether the pattern appears as electrical impulses in an animal’s nervous system, as fluctuations in stock market prices, or as fine detail of an abstract geometric figure. Studying mathematics leads to a variety of exciting professional careers in research, engineering, programming, business, government services, or as teachers at all levels. A Minor in Mathematics is available, a great addition to almost any other major.

Undergraduate Double-Degree Options

Our programs are flexible, allowing for double-degree and specialized track opportunities, while maintaining a four year graduation plan. With proper advising, it’s possible to complete a Bachelors in Mathematics with the following degrees in four years:

  • Anthropology
  • Economics
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Sociology

Mathematics majors also routinely undertake a second major in areas such as Computer Science and Arts/Music/Theater. These usually take more than 120 credits in total, but with careful planning and advising, we can help optimize the plan and get you to graduate at the earliest possible date. If you are interested in these or other similar options, please reach out to Ashwin Vaidya at vaidyaa@3588612.com for more information. Undergraduate-Graduate Five-Year Degrees

Our programs allow for double-degree opportunities in which students could earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree within a span of five years. For instance, we have specific plans that allow students to complete the following three undergraduate-graduate degrees in five years, through proper advising:

Undergraduate Math Degree Tracks

The Math department suggests several tracks for students so they may make the most of their education and pursue mathematics in a way that fulfills their own dreams and aligns with their interests. We recommend the following:

  1. Industry track

  2. Public Service/ Community Engagement track

  3. Theoretical math track

  4. Networks and Complexity track

  5. Math & Art
