Dec. 5, 2024 – Philosophy for Lunch – “Alienation”
Description: The concept of alienation in the writings of Karl Marx has long held a strong philosophical pull. While the young Marx was responding to Hegel, Feuerbach, and other philosophers in his initial attempts to conceptualize alienation, it is not the case that he abandons the concept when he later turns to a more systematic critique of political economy. From the beginning to the end of his writings, alienation factors as a central category, though not without revisions and refinements of what Marx understood it to entail. In this P4L, we will look at the evolution of a concept that continues to exercise a force of attraction and relevance to this day.
