Honor Society and Scholarships

HONOR SOCIETY

Theta Alpha Kappa (TAK)National Honor Society for Religious Studies/Theology – The Montclair State chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa encourages, recognizes, and maintains excellence in Religious Studies.  Most of TAK’s activities are carried on by local chapters, but TAK’s national Board of Directors sponsors a number of programs and prizes and hosts an annual meeting open to all members.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Religion Department offers several merit-based scholarships to Religion undergraduate students. The award amounts and criteria vary. Please see the details below and contact the Religion Department with any questions.


Religion/Kogan Scholarship

Amount:           Up to $500
Criteria:            The Kogan Scholarship is in recognition of Dr. Kogan’s legacy as an inspiring professor and colleague. Candidates must be an undergraduate Religion major or minor who demonstrates favorable academic standing, personal growth, and participation in campus and/or community activities.

Holt Scholarship

Amount:         Up to $500
Criteria:          The Holt Scholarship is named after one of the first students to graduate with a degree in Religious Studies, and Janet Holt was known for curiosity and courageousness. Candidates must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in a field of study within CHSS with a minimum of 3.2 cumulative GPA. Recipients are to be selected by the Chairs of the English, Philosophy, and Religion Departments. The total amount available is to be split among the three departments on an annual basis and typically is up to $500 each.

Peins Scholarship

Amount:         Up to $600
Criteria:          Dr. Maryann Peins generously established the Peins Scholarship to recognize an outstanding Religious Studies major.  Candidates must be a full-time forthcoming junior or senior Religious studies major who demonstrates personal growth, participation in campus and/or community activities, and professional potential. Recipient must have at least 3.2 GPA.

Tayler-Benfield Scholarship

Amount:         $5,000
Criteria:          Dr. Marilyn Tayler and Dr. David Benfield established this scholarship, covering tuition and fees only, to assist one full-time undergraduate student currently enrolled in either the Departments of Religion, Political Science & Law, or Philosophy, who intends to attend law school with a minimum cumulative 3.3 GPA. This scholarship is based on academic achievement. Candidates must submit appropriate application forms to the scholarship committee composed of faculty from the Religion, Political Science & Law, and Philosophy Departments.
